Day 3 6th grade Homeschool

8:30 – 9:20: 50 min English & writing

  • Vocabulary—Start lesson 1 in Lee Mountain’s Vocabulary from Classical Roots – Grade 6
  • Discuss Chapters 2-4 in Alcott’s “An Old Fashioned Girl”, further development of character & theme. Notes on chart paper.

5 min stretch break

9:25 – 10:15: 50 min Math

  • Simplifying Expressions. Review questions as needed from yesterday’s work, p. 209 # 1, 3 (negative sign). ID in #4 which ones would be negative. #12, 22, 28, 31, 35, 37, 38, 39.
  • Khan Academy, Variables & Expressions: watch videos & do “parts of algebraic expressions”; watch “combining like terms” together & do “combining like terms.”
  • HW: Khan Academy “substituting and evaluating expressions” first 2 parts: “Evaluating Expressions with One Variable” and “Variable Expressions with Exponents.”

10 min stretch/snack break

10:25 – 11:15: 50 min History & writing

  • Difference btw. Perspective vs. Bias
  • p. 25 Holt McDougal’s World History: Student Edition Ancient Civilizations Through the Renaissance: 7-question Chapter 1 quiz — may use the text to answer (1B, 2C, 3C, 4D, 5A, 6C, 7D)
  • 30min: watch ~6 min video on archeological dig & take notes (can pause while you write) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ep826NSQ2EM
  • Summarize main points in a paragraph [Roman empire in France, buried in a fire (similar to volcanic ash, but people escaped), found a weapon/armor, problem of “treasure hunting”, about to be turned into buildings and a parking lot.]

11:15 – 11:45: 30 min Art

  • Take a picture of the dog and sketch her 🙂

11:45 – 12:25: 40 min lunch

12:25 – 1:15: 50 min Science

  • Hypothesis: The dog likes beef treats better than anything else. Design an experiment to test this hypothesis. What is the experimental variable? What are the control variables? 
  • Set out a plate with the same size chicken treat, beef treat and the same size peanut butter. Give to dog in the same way 10 times (replacing what she eats). Record which one she chooses in a table.
  • Represent the data in a bar graph. Discuss scale.

1:20 – 2:00: 40 min Language

1:20-1:40: 20 min 10 min Duolinguo Spanish. 10 min Mango Spanish w/ notes. Practice. 

1:40-2:00: 20 min Latin. 10 min Duolinguo. 10 min Cambridge Latin course 1 Caecilius Look up terms in dictionary & take notes in notebook.
